Chongqing is a mountainous megacity and direct-administered municipality in southwest China, known for its spicy hotpot, fog, and dramatic riverside skyline.
Built among the hills where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet, Chongqing is a "mountain city" of bridges, tunnels and vertiginous streets, with a humid, foggy climate.
An ancient Ba-state capital and a wartime capital of the Republic (1937–1946), Chongqing became a municipality in 1997 to lead the development of the western interior.
Chongqing blends Ba-Yu culture with a gritty, energetic modern identity; its dialect, stilted riverside architecture (吊脚楼) and nighttime river cruises are iconic.
The birthplace of Chongqing hotpot—numbing, chili-hot broth with tripe and offal—and of xiaomian noodles, the city's food is famously bold.
Highlights: the Hongyadong stilted complex, the Yangtze cable car, the Dazu Rock Carvings (UNESCO), and the Three Gorges cruises departing upstream.
