Guangxi is an autonomous region in southern China, celebrated for its karst landscapes, the Li River and the vibrant Zhuang ethnic culture.
A subtropical region of limestone peaks, winding rivers and coastal plains along the Beibu Gulf. The Guilin–Yangshuo karst is among the most famous scenery in the world.
Inhabited since the Paleolithic, Guangxi was the land of the Baiyue and later a frontier of the Qin and Tang empires; it became an autonomous region in 1958.
Guangxi is the homeland of the Zhuang, China's largest ethnic minority, alongside Yao, Miao and Dong peoples, expressed in the "singing sands" folk songs and the wind-and-rain bridges.
Guangxi food blends Cantonese and minority flavors: Guilin rice noodles, snail noodles (luosifen) of Liuzhou, and sour bamboo shoots dishes.
Highlights: the Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo, the Detian Waterfall, and the terraced rice fields of Longji.
