Guizhou is a mountainous province in southwest China, prized for its cool climate, karst landscapes, minority cultures and the fastest radio telescope on Earth.
A plateau of karst peaks, gorges and terraced valleys, Guizhou is among China's least flat provinces, with a mild, humid climate that earns it the name "natural air conditioner."
Historically a remote frontier of the Miao, Dong, Buyei and other peoples, Guizhou preserved rich minority traditions and was a refuge during wartime.
Guizhou hosts dozens of ethnic groups; the Miao New Year, Dong grand songs (UNESCO) and the stilted wooden architecture are cultural treasures.
Guizhou food is sour and spicy: sour fish soup (suan tang yu), rice noodles, and the famous "lazy" hotpot; its liquor (Moutai) is world-renowned.
Highlights: the Huangguoshu Waterfall, the Zhijin Cave, the Miao villages of Xijiang, and the FAST radio telescope at Pingtang.
