Jiangxi is a landlocked province in southeast China, famous for the Poyang Lake, the porcelain city of Jingdezhen and the cradle of the Chinese revolution.
Bordered by mountains on three sides, Jiangxi centers on the Gan River basin and holds Poyang Lake, China's largest freshwater lake and a crucial wintering ground for migratory birds.
The heart of the Gan culture and the southern branch of the Silk Road, Jiangxi was where the Nanchang Uprising (1927) and the Jinggangshan revolutionary base began.
Jiangxi is the home of Jingdezhen porcelain ("white as jade"), the Gan opera, and the Lushan summer retreat favored by scholars and statesmen.
Jiangxi cuisine is spicy and savory, relying on chili, fermented black beans and river fish: beggar's chicken, ganpo soup, and the "three cups" chicken.
Highlights: the Poyang Lake wetlands, Mount Lushan, the Wuyuan rapeseed-flower villages, and Jingdezhen's porcelain museums.
