Inner Mongolia is an autonomous region of the People's Republic of China, stretching along the country's northern border with Mongolia and Russia. It is home to vast grasslands, the Gobi Desert and a rich nomadic heritage.
Spanning over 2,400 km from east to west, Inner Mongolia ranges from the Greater Khingan forests in the northeast to the Alxa deserts in the west. Its landscapes include some of the world's best-preserved natural grasslands.
The region was the heartland of the Mongol Empire founded by Genghis Khan. It was incorporated as an autonomous region in 1947, the first such region established in China.
Inner Mongolia is the cultural home of the Mongol, Daur, Ewenki and other peoples. Traditions include Mongolian throat singing (khoomei), horse-head fiddle (morin khuur), wrestling (bökh) and the Naadam festival.
Mongolian hotpot,手把肉 (boiled mutton eaten by hand), milk tea (suutei tsai), and air-dried beef are staples, reflecting a pastoral, meat-and-dairy food culture.
Highlights include the grasslands of Xilingol and Hulunbuir, the Singing Sand Bay (Xiangshawan), and the prehistoric site of Ejina Populus euphratica forest.
