Shandong is a coastal province on the eastern edge of the North China Plain, regarded as the birthplace of Confucius and a cradle of Chinese civilization.
Shandong juts into the Bohai and Yellow seas as the Shandong Peninsula. Its interior is fertile plain drained by the Yellow River, which enters the sea at Dongying.
The heart of the Zhou-era states of Qi and Lu, Shandong was the home of Confucius, Mencius and the sage Laozi's contemporary. It has been a cultural and economic powerhouse for three millennia.
Shandong is the font of Confucian culture, Lu cuisine, and the bold Shandong dialect and folk arts (Yangko dance, Shandong快书). The sacred Mount Tai stands as China's foremost mountain.
Shandong cuisine (Lu cai) is the most influential of China's eight traditions: sweet-and-sour carp, braised abalone, and Dezhou braised chicken. It emphasizes umami and technique.
Highlights: Mount Tai (Taishan), Confucius' hometown Qufu, the springs of Jinan, and the coastal city of Qingdao.
