Sichuan is a large, mountainous province in southwest China, celebrated for its cuisine, the giant panda, and the basin capital Chengdu.
Ringed by the Tibetan plateau to the west and the Qinling range to the north, Sichuan's fertile Red Basin is one of China's most productive agricultural regions, drained by the upper Yangtze (Jinsha).
The heart of the ancient Shu kingdom (Sanxingdui), Sichuan was a cradle of early civilization and a refuge for courts and scholars through the ages.
Sichuan is the home of the Shu culture, the Sichuan opera (with face-changing), and a leisurely teahouse lifestyle centered on Chengdu.
Sichuan cuisine is one of China's eight great traditions, famed for the "málà" (numbing-hot) flavor: mapo tofu, kung pao chicken, and hotpot. It is arguably China's most influential regional cuisine.
Highlights: the panda bases of Chengdu, the Leshan Giant Buddha, Mount Emei, Jiuzhaigou Valley and the ancient irrigation system of Dujiangyan.
