Yunnan is a diverse, mountainous province on China's southwest frontier, renowned for its ethnic mosaic, spring-like climate and the ancient town of Lijiang.
A transition from the Tibetan plateau to the subtropical south, Yunnan has snow mountains, tropical valleys and the headwaters of the Mekong, Salween and Yangtze.
The heart of the ancient Dian and Nanzhao kingdoms, Yunnan was a crossroads of the Southern Silk Road and a meeting point of Han, Tibetan and Southeast Asian cultures.
With 25 ethnic groups, Yunnan is China's most culturally diverse province—expressed in Dai water festivals, Yi torch festivals, Naxi Dongba script and Bai architecture.
Yunnan food is fresh and varied: crossing-the-bridge rice noodles, wild mushrooms, and the floral and sour notes of the south. Pu'er tea originates here.
Highlights: Lijiang Old Town, Shangri-La (Zhongdian), the stone forest of Shilin, and the rice terraces of Yuanyang.
