Autonomous regions are provincial-level ethnic autonomous areas in China. They exercise self-governance power based on local ethnic features. There are five such regions nationwide. The system protects ethnic minority rights and cultures, balances national unity and regional characteristics, and boosts ethnic solidarity and local steady development.
